Lucinda Broad and Revolution, a successful sire of potential event horses of the future

Thoroughbred ex-racehorse, Revolution, has demonstrated his wide ranging talent in the sport of Eventing and Dressage, as well as becoming a successful sire of potential event horses of the future.

His offspring are showing exceptional talent as the 2011 season gets underway.

North Yorkshire horse breeder and competitor, Lucinda Broad, is looking forward to 2011, following a stellar year in 2010 for her and mothers two stallions, Revolution and his son, Sir Suave. Revolution, an ex-racehorse, has had a successful career in eventing, but unusually, this versatile, 17 year old stallion has also turned his hoof to dressage, jumping and a fruitful stud career as well as regularly going hunting.& Meanwhile his son, Sir Suave, has his career ahead of him and has already shown his talent in young horse classes.

Lucinda Broad with Revolution and Sir Suave“Revolution really has shown himself to be very adaptable and has been successful in whatever I have asked him to do. There are not many horses that have had more than one career, especially stallions, but he has had several”, says owner and rider, Lucinda Broad.  “He is now excelling in his stud duties and his offspring are already starting to prove themselves; I am very excited about the coming competition season with Sir Suave”, she says.

Revolution was bought as a 4 year old from Newmarket autumn sales by Dandy Nicholls and Lucinda’s grandfather, Bill Swiers, himself an owner of racehorses of note including Venture Capitalist. Bill went to the sales to look for a potential event horse for Lucinda and they bought Revolution with the intention of having him cut, eventing him for a while and then selling him on.

Lucinda Broad and Revolution, a successful sire of potential event horses of the futureFrom the moment they got him home, Rev, as he is affectionately known, was so quiet to ride and look after that they never got around to getting him gelded. During his first winter, Lucinda hunted him regularly and they jumped their first fence out hunting with the Bedale. Thinking that the hunting may have refreshed him, the horse was put back into training and ran again as a 5 year old in January. But racing was not his game and he did not want to know, so Lucinda took him eventing and found that the horse shared her enjoyment of the sport.

They did their first pre-novice at Bishop Burton in May of the same year and Revolution accumulated 14 BE points at novice level as a 5 year old. He flew round his first intermediate at Witton Castle as a 6 year old before disaster struck at Blair, his first 2* event, where a rabbit hole on the steeplechase caused a tear in his tendon sheath which would affect his future in eventing.

After a year off, Lucinda started working him again and everything seemed to be going well with the pair competing at intermediate and 2* level and then at advanced level. But Lucinda was not happy that the horse was 100% - the old tendon injury seemed occasionally to affect him so he retired to stud.

Rev has turned his hand to just about everything; hunting in winter and a successful stud career.Since then Rev has turned his hand to just about everything; hunting in winter and a successful stud career. Lucinda’s mother, Beryl, had bred several successful event horses from her mare, My Abigail, and she agreed that Rev might make a good sire.& His first foal was out of Beryl’s home bred mare, My Abyssinia, a daughter of My Abigail who Lucinda had competed to advanced level eventing. The foal, a filly named My Evolution, won four pre-novice events as a 5 year old, won and was placed at Novice level as a 6 year old and finished 10th and 3rd in her first two intermediate level events as a 7 year old, earning 35 BE points, before she suffered a catastrophic spiral fracture of the pastern. This put an end to her competition career, but thankfully the leg healed and she is now an excellent mother. In 2010 she was graded as a brood mare and earned the highest mark of the year in the Sport Horse GB studbook. She also bred a lovely foal by the well-know Eventing stallion, Jumbo, earning a high First Premium at the BEF Futurity Evaluations with the second highest mark ever for a Jumbo offspring.

Another of Rev’s progeny, My Abalution, out of My Abalu, completed her first 1* horse trials in 2010, finishing 30th out of 140 starters, and completed his first intermediate horse trial, finishing 4th.

Sir Suave was My Abyssinia’s second foal, a chestnut colt by RevolutionSir Suave was My Abyssinia’s second foal, a chestnut colt by Revolution who is also making his mark in the eventing world. He was eye catching from the outset and as a yearling he earned a coveted First Premium in the British Equestrian Federation’s Futurity Evaluations. He equalled this achievement a year later as a 2 year old and was first at Bramham in the In-Hand Potential 3-day Event Horse class.& As a 3 year old he earned the highest BEF Futurity accolade, an Elite Premium. 2010 was a stellar year for the young horse, then a 4 year old, finishing first in the British Young Event Horse (BYEH) at Hambledon Show, fourth at Bramham BYEH and first at the Richmond Lycetts British Young Event Horse qualifier, where he beat his nearest rival by 9 marks.

Spring Revolution is another 4 year old by Revolution who is showing talent in the eventing arena. Owned and bred by Jane Crossley, he was second to Sir Suave at Richmond and will be aimed at Burghley Young Event horse classes in 2011.

Initially, Revolution bred just 1 foal per year but three are now of competition age and proving very successful. With more promising youngsters still maturing, he is an exciting prospect as a sire of top competition horses, and certainly one to look out for.&

“Revolution has such a wonderful temperament to go with his talent, which I am sure has enabled him to achieve so much. He is passing both these traits on to his offspring and it will be very exciting to watch as more of them begin their competitive careers in 2011”, says Lucinda.

“I used Revolution for my four star Selle Francais mare Douce de Longvaut as he has quality and ability coupled with a wonderful temperament. The two year old I now have is beautifully put together and looks to be the nicest one out of the five foals I bred from the mare. I would definitely use Revolution again”.

Top Dressage trainer Ian Woodhead says, “After riding Sir Suave in training I must say he’s one of the most pleasurable horses with a phenomenal attitude to work and a fantastic canter”

Olympic team gold rider Nicola Wilson says “After riding Sir Suave a few times i was very impressed with his mental trainable brain and impressed with his three athletic paces and large scope jump”

Revolution will appear in the stallion parade at Badminton Horse Trials in April before moving to Stallion AI service Twemlows Stud in Shropshire where he will stand for the stud season.

Sir Suave will be competing so he’s available with frozen semen anytime for stallion AI services Twemlows Hall.
