The Caerphilly Rescue - Red Wings
All 53 ponies are doing really well not to mention eleven new foals Says Redwings
We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who donated following the double rescue we carried out from Caerphilly in Wales, back in February andMarch.
All 53 ponies we took in are doing really well, and we have had eleven foals born too, which was a bit of a surprise but what a lovely one!
Caerphilly Borough Council’s Trading Standards Department originally led the rescue from two sites in Caerphilly, with expert help given by Redwings.
On the first occasion we sent three lorries, two vets and eight handling staff to the site to bring back 26 horses and ponies to Norfolk. They arrived very subdued, poorly and starving hungry. We were overwhelmed by the messages of support from you, our kind supporters, and the story was even featured on the local news.
We had removed the worst ones and day by day they gradually began to improve. However that was not the end by any means, as our Welfare team returned to Wales a month later when it became clear that the conditions for the ones that had been left behind had not improved. We removed the remaining 27 that day, and brought them all back to Redwings.
The groups were named after fictional detectives and fairytale baddies; ranging from Jessica Fletcher, Sherlock Holmes, Agatha, Dr Watson and Rebus to Madame Mim, Dastardly, Morgana and Miss Scarlett! We are delighted to report that all 53 have make amazing recoveries, and that 11 foals have also safely arrived. Some of the ponies were so emaciated on arrival that we didn't even know they were pregnant, so it's amazing that they have gone on to have healthy and happy foals. Here are just a few of them:
