Sarah Moorhouse
Busy event rider Sarah Moorhouse balances working part-time as a Dental Nurse with her eventing ambitions.
Based near Clitheroe, Lancashire, the 27-year-old has ridden all her life with the help of her mum Carol and the team work hard at home with the aim of success on the eventing circuit.
Supported by performance boot experts Grubs, Sarah is having a fantastic year, with highs including competing at the CIC* at Chatsworth International.
Tell us about your horses?
I currently have five horses on the yard, ranging in abilities from youngsters to intermediate event horses.
EHS Princess Cornelia is a big grey mare standing 17.2hh, the Warmblood x Thoroughbred is currently competing at novice level. We have had problems in the past with brakes across country, but thankfully this is now sorted and we are hoping to do the CCI * at Osberton Horse Trials.
Jigsaw Cavalier is a seven-year-old skewbald mare. An Irish Sport Horse, she is known at home as Tallulah and nicknamed 'The Flying Cow'. Tallulah has now competed at two CIC* and Sarah bought her as a three-year-old from Ireland.
Midnight Cavalier One is Jigsaw Cavaliers full sister. Fluffer's as she is known at home, is six-years-old and competing in BE100 classes.
We then have Kevin a five-year-old Connemara x Irish Sports Horse who we are aiming for Skipton Horse Trials and Penelope a three-year-old Irish Sports Horse.
Who do you train with?
I train with Chris Dugdale for dressage, Richard Barton for show jumping and Andrew Heffernan for cross country. It is great to have access to three riders and trainers with so much knowledge.
What is your biggest achievement to date?
I would have to say 'Surviving' in general!
What would you like to achieve in the future?
I would like to compete in a four star event – that would be fantastic!
How do you cope with competition nerves?
My nerves lie with the cross country phase! I am better when I am on a horse as I do get quite nervous on the ground and whilst walking the cross country course but as soon as I leave the start box I am fine.
What would be your dream horsey item if money were no object?
A big flashy lorry – certainly a dream.
When buying a horse what type do you look for?
I enjoy working with young horses and the sense of achievement you get when you put in all the hard work and it all pays off.
Do you have any tips for other event riders?
Work hard and play hard. It is hard doing it on your own, but the outcome is definitely worth it so just keep going.
Do you have any pets?
Three dogs Flint, Patsy and Cassandra.
