Cattle are dangerous

Says Bryony DickinsMy horse was at livery on Ashdown Forest adjacent to the fenced area where sheep and cattle graze in the summer.

Being an Arab my horse could be very reactive, so I always took care to be observant and aware of any potential hazards.

I’m a capable rider, having ridden since the age of 5 and I have trained and competed to a fair standard across most horse sports.

My horse wasn’t frightened of cattle under normal circumstances, but on one occasion a young cow came out from behind a gorse bush as I was cantering steadily along a track.

Her sudden appearance and close proximity was just too much for my horse who spooked violently depositing me on the ground. Fortunately it was the only time I ever fell off him.

On other occasions when I’ve met cattle if they’ve been spread across the path, I have found it necessary to turn back, as I am very aware that cattle can be unpredictable if you were to attempt to ride though a herd.

I know of other riders who have had falls caused by cattle or sheep.

The problem is the vegetation which prevents the horses from being able to see the animals in advance.
