New roads to be built for more traffic
– when traffic is not increasing
The Government has published a draft planning policy which claims that traffic is set to grow by 40 per cent.
It says this means we need enough new road space for 40 per cent more cars and lorries by 2040.
But traffic is not increasing! The Government’s forecasts are now widely discredited and in fact traffic today is lower than it was in 2003.
Roads made more important than the environment, and climate concerns gagged
The new policy states that this ‘need’ for new road capacity should override protection of the countryside and precious landscapes. Most outrageously, it includes a clause that stops campaigners objecting to road plans on the grounds of carbon emissions, stating that other policies will 'offset' the carbon impact of new roads.
We need everyone who is concerned about the impact of roads on our transport, countryside and climate to tell the Government to abandon these dangerous plans.
We need to tell the Government they must remove the climate gag from transport planning decisions; restore protection for wildlife and landscapes, and stop planning for 40 per cent more cars. Instead we need a sensible roads policy that promotes safer streets, smarter travel, slower speeds and, above all, less traffic.
